Textile artist

Hi, I'm Ally

I’m a textile artist based in the West Highlands of Scotland, creating felted landscapes inspired by the textures, colours and shifting light of the natural world around me.

After graduating from Nottingham Trent University with a degree in Textile Design, I began my career as a woven textile designer before moving into teaching. Although I loved sharing creativity with others, the desire to return to making my own work never left.

Four years ago I made the move to Scotland, fulfilling a long-held dream to live and work closer to nature. The dramatic landscapes here now influence everything I create, from the fibres I choose to the colours and textures that shape each piece.

Artistic Inspiration

The landscapes that surround me in the Scottish Highlands are my greatest source of inspiration. Many of my ideas begin while travelling in my little campervan, exploring pine forests, windswept beaches, rugged mountains and dramatic stormy skies.

I try to capture those fleeting moments in nature that make you pause — a shift in light across a hillside, the colours of a distant shoreline, or the atmosphere before a storm. I collect these moments through sketches, paintings and photographs, which later become references in my studio.

Using layers of merino wool and textured yarns, I build each piece slowly, creating compositions of colour, contrast and texture. Through this process I translate those experiences in the landscape into my felted wool paintings.
